Join Stock Gumshoe Today, Help a Veteran or a Refugee or the Environment or the Hungry or Hurricane Sandy Victims or …

By Travis Johnson, Stock Gumshoe, December 3, 2012

For several years now, we’ve made an effort to “give back” in some substantial way here at Stock Gumshoe — we’ve done this in a few different ways and benefitting a half dozen or so different charities over those years, and every year we’ve set a new record for how much we (well, really you) have been able to contribute.

This year, we’re trying to broaden it a bit — so instead of just making a contribution for each new member who joins the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars like we’ve done in the past (that’s our paid membership), we’re going to make a contribution for everyone who either joins or renews or upgrades their membership over the next ten days. So that way, if you joined up during last year’s drive your renewal contribution will have a chance to benefit a worthy cause again this year.

Here are the nuts and bolts:

Click here for information on joining the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars and the easy signup page.

or Click here if you’re already a free member and would like to upgrade (that way you can keep the same username and password).

I will make a charitable contribution equal to half of Stock Gumshoe’s gross subscription revenue over the next ten days. So for every annual membership in the Irregulars ($49), I’ll donate $24.50, for every platinum lifetime membership ($200) I’ll donate $100. Same for quarterly and monthly payments, whether renewals or first time memberships — half of the money that comes in from the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars over the next ten days will go to a charitable cause.

Which cause? Well, I’ve narrowed it down to six different organizations that I like, all are doing important work and all are well-run and relatively efficient and all are causes that I consider relatively non-controversial and that I would contribute to personally (I’m sure not everyone will agree with that, and I hope you’ll support the causes that are important to you — if it’s a choice between joining the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars and making a donation to your favorite charity, please do the latter, we love the support of our members but no one at Gumshoe HQ is missing any meals).

But we’re going to pick just two of these organizations to split the pot, and I need your help to choose which ones folks would rather see receive the money.

We’re collecting opinions through a Facebook Poll that you can see at the top of our Facebook page here. Whichever two of these charities get the most votes will get our donations.

What are our charitable candidates this time around?

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts — I’m sure most of you have food banks near you, but this is the one that serves the area where I live. They do just what they say, they collect food and distribute it to those in need, and need is great right now.

The American Red Cross — This would be for the disaster relief fund, in recognition of the incredible amount of work they’ve done and will continue to do with Hurricane Sandy victims.

Homes for Our Troops — This organization builds specially adapted homes for injured veterans, folks who have physical needs that require specialized living environments, and they do so at no cost to the injured veteran in need.

International Rescue Committee — The IRC helps those who are forced to leave their homes due to war or disaster, emergency relief and relocation for refugees in some of the most difficult parts of the world.

Operation Homefront — Help for military families.

The Conservation Fund — This efficient group helps to preserve public land, with support for preserving and conserving historic, wild, park and recreation spaces and farmland in the United States.

So which one do you like? Whether or not you’re joining the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars or having your membership renew over the next ten days, let us know where you think the money should flow. Each does different things well, and some are more efficient than others, but I think they’re all well-run and doing important work, so I’ll be happy to cut a check to whichever two make the grade for most Stock Gumshoe readers. Thanks for your help!

And if there’s a tie or some problem with the poll, well, I reserve the right to just pick the winners … though I’d really rather have you do that for me. If you hate Facebook and don’t want to use it to vote in this poll, just tell us which one of the causes you prefer with a comment below and we’ll try to do the math.

Oh, and yes, we want more Stock Gumshoe Irregulars! If you haven’t already tired of hearing about our paid membership option, it provides you with access to all the stuff on the site, including my personal portfolio comments (buy and sell notes and general musings), our Discussions page where Irregulars can submit new topics, and the weekly stuff that we publish just for the Irregulars — the Friday File, which can be a teaser article or something about my portfolio or updates on older ideas, and the “Idea of the Month,” which is a new investment idea that I profile for the Irregulars once a month.

And you also, if you’re logged in as an Irregular, will get a favorite new feature: the Irregulars Quick Take box, which we include in most free articles to give the Irregulars a short summary and list of the stocks teased.

And of course, the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars also keep the lights on over on the free side of the site — we do have advertising on our free emails and on the website, as you’ve probably noticed, but the Irregulars are our largest single source of revenue to keep the great Gumshoe machine going.

Thank you for considering membership in the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars (if you’re not already a member, that is), and please let us know if you think one of those charitable organizations particularly deserves our funding this year by clicking one of the options in our poll at the top of our Facebook page here.

Hey Travis,
I’ve been getting (and enjoying) your free emails for a long time and finally figured I’d join the Irregulars so that you could donate a little more to a worthy charity. My vote is for IRC. Looking forward to finally seeing what the Irregulars see.
All the best (and Happy Holidays),
Jon
