Top 5 Cobalt Miners To Consider
by Matt Bohlsen Sneaking Alpha
|
Summary

2016 was lithium’s year, 2017 might well be cobalt’s year.

A critical point to understand when investing in cobalt companies is the impact of associated metals such as copper and nickel (or molybdenum) prices have on the cobalt producer.

My top 5 cobalt miners for 2017.

2016 was quite a good year for cobalt and the cobalt miners; however, I think 2017 can be just as good if not better. Cobalt is currently the most critical element in the electric vehicle (EV) lithium ion battery supply chain, as well as lithium.

An article from sneeky alpha by Matt Bohlsen for your consideration

$NTTHF IPO July 20, 2016 at CAD 1.20 per share
Neo Lithium (OTC:NTTHF) (TSXV:NLC) – Price = CAD 1.09, USD = 0.78

Summary

A new high grade and low impurities lithium discovery in the Lithium Triangle.

The 3Q project has the highest lithium grades of any project in Argentina.

The recent market dip offers investors a fair valued entry point, for an early stage lithium brine project with great potential.

$CTEQF – Clean TeQ Holdings Limited – I received this “Cobalt: A Precarious Supply Chain” from Clean TeQ IR this evening. The article has some good graphics and info on Cobalt in batteries. I’m kind of scratching my head on the Cobalt demand and pricing graphics they to be counter intuitive. The article also seems to be slanted against Cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also seems to short change North America. Still a good read for the overview of Cobalt in batteries.

Top 3 Graphite Miners To Consider by Matt Bohlsen at sneeky Alpha

http://seekingalpha.com/article/4035719-top-3-graphite-miners-consider?app=1&uprof=46&isDirectRoadblock=true
This includes an overview of the Graphite market,.

There is a “Speculative pick – Zenyatta Ventures (OTCQX:ZENYF) (NYSE:ZEN) – Price = USD 0.66, CAD 0.91” that I find interesting. I don’t if it is because they are in North America or the Gigafactory. Tesla Gigafactory is just starting production and will be souring their material from North America. Zenyatta has “a unique type of graphite, and they are targeting the higher priced spherical graphite used in the lithium ion battery market.” The number two pick is also in Canada and has been on a roll.

Haste makes waste. There were several Graphite mines mentioned in the above article and not really covered. I mentioned one $ZEN (I like that symbol) and the other Focus Graphite. In looking at their site to signup for a news letter I notice a “Battery Presentation” interesting read;

http://www.focusgraphite.com/corporate-presentation/

Focus Graphite web site has a lot of information on Graphite and news. It also mentions that China has a limit on Graphite exports. Now if someone would total the North American demand for Graphite against world production.

$BSRC – Biosolar

All batteries have an Anode and Cathode or more commonly known as +positive and – negative (ground) terminals for connection to make the old car start. When it comes to Lithium-ion batteries the terminals do a lot more than just provide connection points. for battery power. The Anode and Cathode (terminals) are also the limiting factor for power, capacity, re-charge, and self dis-charge Biosolar is working to solve those limits. This is also the time I’ve seen any kind of comparison to Vanadium flow batteries.

http://magazine.onlinetes.com/article/november-december-2016/high-capacity-energy-storage.aspx

Depending on what material Biosolar ends up using in their anodes and cathodes may well determine material price takes dive. That is why I subscribe to the Biosolar newsletter.

Lithium Americas Cauchari-Olaroz lithium salar is the 3rd largest lithium brine deposit in the world.
Lithium Americas announced yesterday a US$174 million strategic investment by Ganfeng Lithium, which significantly de-risks the company.
My end 2019 price target rises from CAD 1.31 to CAD 1.83-2.40, representing 91-150% upside.

Therer is a program scheduled for this coming week on Public Broadcasting. It is part of the NOVA series which are usually pretty informative.
Program Description
We live in an age when technological innovation seems to be limitlessly soaring. But for all the satisfying speed with which our gadgets have improved, many of them share a frustrating weakness: the batteries. Though they have improved in last century, batteries remain finicky, bulky, expensive, toxic, and maddeningly short-lived. The quest is on for a “super battery,” and the stakes in this hunt are much higher than the phone in your pocket. With climate change looming, electric cars and renewable energy sources like wind and solar power could hold keys to a greener future…if we can engineer the perfect battery. Join host David Pogue as he explores the hidden world of energy storage, from the power—and danger—of the lithium-ion batteries we use today, to the bold innovations that could one day charge our world.

I have sense that this maybe a unique yet comprehensive look at the world of batteries. I suspect it will only be an hour long but it should be fun and interesting.

Check with your local PBS station for scheduling.

This months article from Matt Bohlsen at seeking alpo. on Electric Vehicles – Es. This article has the year sales results for 2016 and others notes of interest by mfg. Of note is that EV cost will be very close to internal combustion engine cars now by 2020. It might be of interest to read this article before the PBS Nova progrm In Search of the Super Battery. Tesla is already manufacturing the EV with the best range on battery charge, and the Gigafactory has gone into production this month.

Would you buy a Electric Vehicle from China? Are you going to have a choice? China now has 46% of the global EV market by volume. Chinas only EV competition maybe who has the better battery. Tesla has the longest range EV this year, I would start watching the ads for miles per charge and time to recharge. All this is a lead up to another article by Matt Bohlsen @ seeking Alpo;
