Have a question in mind that you think is so dumb you’re embarrassed to ask it? That’s what we’re here for today!
This bonus post was inspired by a reader who wanted to know “where to ask a dumb question” here on Stock Gumshoe… and while his question was not actually stupid, and I’m happy to see questions pop up in our comment threads anywhere on the site, I thought it would be a great idea to open the floor and be more welcoming for the shy, the embarrassed, or, yes, even the uninformed.
So this is a no-judgement zone… smart people do things we’d call “dumb” all the time: Warren Buffett didn’t invest in Google in 2004, Albert Einstein married his cousin, and I just had to go back and double check that I didn’t call him Alfred Einstein (which I’ve done before, in print). So if you have that question that you can’t ask your stockbroker or your brother-in-law or Twitter without feeling like a dummy, let ‘er rip by submitting it below. I’ll be nice… and we might all learn something.
And yes, the SEC is always watching, so I must remind you that I can’t give personal investment advice… but I’ll try to share whatever opinion or answers I can provide to any investment-related question you’ve got, though if we end up with a lot of them it might take me a little while to answer thoughtfully.
So please, let your questions fly using the friendly little comment box below… and thanks for being the best readers in cyberspace!
(I will moderate the discussion just to make sure we don’t get too much profanity or offensive stuff, or personal attacks, but I’ll use a light hand — you can be mean to me if you like, just don’t be mean to any other participants.)
Is there data available on the volume of high frequency(millisecond) trading?
What is best trading platform to buy Cryptos. Robinhood doesn’t sell pot or cryptos in Georgia
Hi Travis,
I’m wondering if you would consider adding a column to your Real Money Portfolio, something along the lines of “I would consider buying more shares of this company below this price” kind of thing. You are often specific about this during the individual stock updates in the Friday Files (for example, IIPR under $35, at least as of last week) and it would be nice to have those ideas in one place.
where do I find stocks paying qualified dividends?
The vast majority of regular corporation stock dividends will be “qualified,” the place where you typically find unqualified dividends is in REITs and BDCs which pass along their income tax liability to shareholders. I’m not aware of a screen that sorts just by that criteria, but it might exist — any company that pays dividends is likely to post a disclosure early in the year on their website indicating what portion of the dividend was qualified earnings, what was return of capital, and what was non-qualified.
Is there data available showing which dividends are qualified dividends?
Travis, enjoy your insights on the sales pitches I get in emails everyday. New question, since so many stock shares are held by mutual funds, hedge funds, and under the umbrellas of ETF’s it looks like individual investors have no “say on pay” on executive compensation. I’m a big believer in the free market and people earning what they are worth but companies paying a handful of executives $100 million a year plus the directors $300K or more is becoming plundering the company for ridiculous pay rates. The executives appoint board members that will give them more compensation and everyone gets their raises and bonuses and laugh all the way to the bank. I assume all the mutual funds, hedge funds, and ETFs just go along with this so everyone in the finance world gets their big paydays, is this about right?
Much of the time — big institutional shareholders like pension funds have traditionally been the most
Likely to exert pressure, but even that’s pretty rare. Folks are trying to get “passive” fund managers to vote more responsibly, and there are several shareholder services groups that essentially research and advise institutions on how to vote… but any change has certainly been slow, and CEO pay and the myth of the “super CEO” who’s worth 1,000 workers is an obscenity.
Is the money zone legit?
It’s probably a scam. He says that each recommendation will cost $300 to $500 per contract and 5 to 10 contracts are necessary to generate the numbers he throws out in his spiel i.e up to $11,000. He then says the scheme is credit spreads on the SPY. A credit spread results in a credit of premium so why do contracts cost $300 to $500. His other service, Zenith, is a scam and is non-refundable. Out of the first 10 recos since I joined 9 have been a 100% loss, such as buying a $120 put on FB, or a $12.50 put on UAA which then rose from $13.81 on day of reco to $23.51 today 6/5/18. 100% losses on SBUX, M, LULU, FIT, MAT, FOSL and AET -2nd half of trade.
Tried to do a Visa charge back unsuccessfully.
I think I have figured out how to show huge gains LOL. I bought 10 lots of $CVSI about 2 months ago, yesterday I sold out 2 lots recovering my initial investment and some profit. I then proceeded to reconfigure the price of the remaining 8 lots that now have cost me nothing to $.01 per share and low and behold I have a 2390% gain. LOL. Travis thanks again for your coverage of $IQ my Dec 15 calls are up 107% and my Jan 25 calls 194%

Ok I chickened out sold 80% of my $IQ Jan $25 Calls for a very nice 474.37% profit and all of my Jan 32 $TWTR call for a nice 146% gain. I would not have bought these shares if not for the research done by Travis. Thanks, I still hold $IQ shares and $TWTR

what are the best indicators that will warn you of a coming market fall like 2008?
Losers leading gainers, interest rates inverted, and unrealistically high PE’s, these are from J. Tuma a planner in Dallas in about 1999.
Any opinions on Prosper Trading Academy signals?
I have been with Prosper Trading Academy for about a year and my experience has been awesome. Don’t look to get rich quick as they are very big on risk management. I have a lifetime membership in three of the “rooms” but typically hang out in the Momentum room. Two guys that run the room are very sharp, live the markets and always have their finger on the pulse of things. The options room is incredible too. Do they score 100% on their trades? NO, but they’re right most of the time and if there not, stops are in place. Let me know if you have any other questions.
pricing?
It’s $1497/year for the Option Spreads recommendations (typically 5-8 per week) through July 31 (expires tonight midnight EST) – normally 3996/year.
They say they are usually in a spread for 5-8 days, the examples they give are in a range of 0%-300% return, on the webinar they claim 65/35 win/loss.
Have a “guarantee” of “at least one 110% recommendation within 60 days – not sure if that’s meant as 110% ROI or profit.
I’m considering pulling the trigger, the principal is Scott Bauer who seems legit, and has been on CNBC as an ‘expert’

Can you shed any light on Money Morning Profit Alerts’ “audit of Social Security” that results in many of us “may be owed payments from Social Security” even if we are already enrolled in it, as in are retirement age or started taking it early?
WHAT IS IQ?
IQ ? Do you mean the stock symbol for IQ? If so IQ is the symbol for the Chinese company Iqiyi an ADR listed on the NYSE. Many have given it the nickname the “Chinese Netflix”
Has anybody come across the lengthy teaser ad called OPERATION GET EVERYTHING? Zack Scheidt, editor of THE DAILY EDGE, seems to claim we can all be one step ahead of the upcoming Ivanka Trump revenge against the retail sector that caused her to discontinue her fashion business.
Please note that I am NOT interested in a political discussion. However, as an investor, I am interested in the alleged real estate and/or retail companies that will likely be involved.
Haven’t posted in a while too busy boating and fishing but I thought I’d give a heads up to all the great people here on this site. Early June I bought one of he few marijuana stocks listed in the USA. I bought $CVSI for 1.42 now I don’t know what’s driving the stock but it has gone up almost every day and closed at $6.60 or so Friday. Anyways not pushing this stock or making any recommendations on it just being informative for you pot investors 🙂
